Olivet Community Church Associate Pastor Position

 We are seeking an energetic, Christ-centered leader who is motivated to fill the current opening (see position description below) and brings to the position the following characteristics:

Disciple Maker

Possesses a desire to make disciples of others, equipping members of the congregation to lead in ministry and to reach out in the community with the gospel. They must be able to recruit and then help others grow deeper into a relationship with Jesus Christ.

Collaborator

From a vision for the future of the church, able to build teams and ministries. Willing and able to collaborate with other leaders.

Mission-minded

Possesses a servant heart and a passion for mission. Motivated by the challenge of activating the missional-mindset in others. Understands missional communities and the processes and skills needed to share the Gospel with others in both word and deed.

Communicator

Able to speak and write clearly and effectively. Articulate communicator with individuals, small and large groups.

Relational

Places a high priority on the importance of relationships. Demonstrates the ability to be a good listener, is approachable, and is encouraging to others. Able to build relationships across all generations and people with diverse backgrounds.  

Position Title: Associate Pastor for Adult Ministries

Accountable to: Supervised by the Senior Pastor with additional accountability to the Session of Olivet and the Midwest Presbytery of the EPC.

Employment Status: Full Time

Responsible to Supervise:  Position does not supervise staff, but will have collaborative leadership responsibility for key adult ministry program areas including discipleship training, adult classes, small groups, and the Deacon ministry.

Purpose:  This position provides leadership needed to advance Olivet’s mission of ‘making disciples who make disciples’ by equipping the congregation to grow in Christ and reach out to our local community with the gospel.  Further, as the Associate Pastor gains experience and develops relationships within the congregation, it is anticipated he/she may succeed the Senior Pastor as he transitions to retirement.

Job Responsibilities:

Adult Ministry Vision and Leadership:

  • Develop and implement the vision and strategies for disciple-making across all Adult Ministries that will better enable members to become disciple-makers.
  • Support adult ministry teams and small groups, ensuring appropriate structure, training, curriculum, and accountabilities are in place to carry-out the work of each adult ministry.
  • Teach mid-week adult classes.
  • Develop and mentor next generation small group facilitators.
  • Steward the Deacon ministry.
  • Model the character and leadership qualities that exemplify the servant heart of Christ.

Worship and Preaching:

  • In close coordination with the Senior Pastor and Worship Team, periodically assist in planning and orchestrating all aspects of worship.
  • In coordination with the Senior Pastor, periodically prepare for and preach during Worship.

Governance and Administrative:

  • Regularly meet and work with the Session to set vision and plans for Adult Ministries and become familiar with the overall work of the Session.
  • Regularly meet and work with the Staff to plan and coordinate all Olivet ministry activities.
  • Periodically attend Presbytery meetings.

Education and Experience:

  • Graduate of accredited seminary with minimum of MDiv or Masters of Theology.
  • Currently ordained, or able to qualify for ordination, as a Teaching Elder in the EPC.
  • 1-3 years of Adult Discipleship experience in a congregational setting.

Personal Characteristics and Requirements:

  • Has a growing relationship with Christ that is reflected in a high moral character, teachable spirt and servant leadership heart.
  • Is visionary and self-motivated.
  • Has a passion for people and reaching the lost for Christ.
  • Demonstrates excellent leadership, interpersonal and team-building skills.
  • Is committed to a team approach to ministry.
  • Able to preach/teach the Word of God in a compelling, understandable manner.
  • Able to communicate effectively in speaking and writing.
  • Supports an egalitarian position on the ordination of women as pastors, ruling elders and deacons.
  • Supports a biblical view of marriage.
  • Motivated to train under Senior Pastor to potentially assume lead Pastor role within 1- 3 years.
  • Passes background checks.
