Associate Pastor for Engagement  Job Description

Westminster Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, NC is seeking an associate pastor who will be focused on community engagement and outreach. This pastor will work alongside the senior pastor and other staff members to fulfill the mission and vision of the church in the ECO denomination.

Westminster Presbyterian Church is a vibrant and growing congregation that seeks to glorify God and make disciples of Jesus Christ. We are part of ECO: A Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians, a denomination that adheres to Reformed theology and Presbyterian polity. We value biblical authority, missional living, relational covenant, and leadership development. We have a diverse and multi-generational membership of about 500 people who are committed to worship, fellowship, service, and outreach.

About the Position

The Associate Pastor for Engagement will be responsible for leading and expanding the church’s ministries that connect with the covenant partners with one another and the community around us.   This pastor will have a passion for sharing the gospel, building community and serving others in the name of Jesus. This pastor will also have a gift for preaching and teaching God’s word and will assist with pastoral duties as needed.

Responsibilities

  1.         Primary Responsibilities

The primary focus of the Associate Pastor for Engagement is to lead covenant partners into a deeper connection with Christ, the Westminster church family and our surrounding community through the following:

  • Casting and implementing a vision for the Westminster community to lead covenant partners into the deeper engagement of belonging and connecting with church family; 
  • Facilitating small groups, affinity groups, discipleship events, fellowship events, and other opportunities to engage community partners within the Westminster community;
  • Recruiting and training church volunteers who are involved in community engagement and outreach activities;
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with local ministry partners to cultivate outreach opportunities for covenant partners; and
  • Developing evangelistic connections for covenant partners to share their faith with others.
  1.         Shared Responsibilities

The pastoral and administrative staff at Westminster is a team devoted to serving God through the leading and nurturing of the body of believers at Westminster.   The shared responsibilities as a member of this team include:

  • Preaching 8-12 times per year under the guidance of the Senior Pastor:
  • Leading in Worship services under the guidance of the Senior Pastor;
  • Assisting with other pastoral duties such as conducting weddings, funerals and baptisms and providing pastoral care and counseling;
  • Attending regular staff meetings;
  • Serving as Moderator of the Diaconate, providing assistance in their work and serving as their staff liaison; and
  • Supporting other pastors, church officers, and programs as appropriate.
  1.         Personal Responsibilities

Pastors carry significant responsibilities and burdens as they serve a growing, active church community.   It is imperative to take care of one’s soul in ways that include:

  • Maintaining a personal commitment to a regular study of God’s Word, a growing faith journey, and a deepening prayer life;
  • Developing relationships outside the Westminster community to encourage and sustain personal and professional well-being; and
  • Pursuing professional development opportunities that will enhance work at Westminster and in the community beyond.

Qualifications

  • Ordained, pursing ordination or willing to transfer ordination in the ECO presbytery;
  • Follow the Essential Tenets of ECO – Owen to verify this language;
  • Accredited theological degree from a recognized seminary or equivalent;
  • Experience in church, campus ministry or similar settings;
  • Comfortable in large social settings and able to initiate conversations with diverse groups of people;
  • Outgoing disposition and passion for sharing the gospel and serving others;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team; and
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.

Compensation

The Associate Pastor for Engagement will receive a competitive salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. The church will also provide benefits such as health insurance, retirement plan, vacation time, continuing education allowance, and reimbursement for ministry expenses.
