The Associate Pastor works under the direction and supervision of the lead pastor and to join the elders in leading the worship ministry of the church as well as incubating, developing, initiating, and implementing ministry and discipleship for college students and young adults as they grow in Christ. This position could also entail initiating ministries at local college campuses. The Associate Pastor will be critical in providing pastoral care and leadership to these key groups while integrating them into the life of the greater church body.

This position also consists of supporting pastoral and administrative functions for all areas of church ministry in order to execute the vision and mission of Wellspring Church.


  • Agreement with Wellspring Church’s theological distinctives, vision, and mission.
  • Meets all of the character qualifications of elder as stated in 1 Timothy 3, Titus 1 and 1 Peter 5.
  • Personal devotion to live in light of the Gospel, a continuing awareness of a need for the Savior, and a heart open to grow and mature in Christ.
  • Shepherding heart who sees God’s people as Christ’s Bride and has eyes of compassion, as a shepherd who protects and cares for both the church and his own family.
  • Deep love and heart for God’s people.
  • Commitment to the local church and a willingness to commit to submit to its governance and leadership.
  • Personable and relational, enjoying people and adapting to the needs of ministry wherever that leads him.
  • Self-starter who actively pursues ministry and people, rather than passively awaiting instructions.
  • Supported by a wife who encourages him to serve the church freely and joyously, but walks the tension of managing his family well (1 Tim 3:5).
  • Experience in developing creative solutions through proven problem-solving techniques to address complex challenges.
  • Strong design, planning, and project management skills, ensuring timely delivery of ministry objectives.
  • Experience in developing, mentoring, and coaching ministry leaders.
  • Able to teach and expositionally preach gospel-centered, biblically-based messages.
  • Master’s degree or equivalent in Bible, Theology, or Ministry .


Worship Ministry

  • Provide vision, direction, development, and management for all aspects of the Worship and Tech (sound/video/lighting) ministries.
  • Experienced in leading worship and developing bands spiritually and musically.
  • Discover, develop, and deploy volunteers necessary to accomplish the vision and goals of the ministry.
  • Pastoral leading and investment in the spiritual development and community of the volunteer teams.
  • Develop, train, and mentor new worship leaders, including those from our youth ministry.
  • Work with the Lead and Associate Pastors to plan and implement Sunday worship services and other worship gatherings (i.e. Christmas Eve) where people have an opportunity to encounter the living God through various worship elements.

College Ministry

  • Develop a comprehensive strategy to disciple students as they transition spiritually into adulthood.
  • Pastoral care for those college students associated with Wellspring who are currently attending college outside of the Bay Area.
  • In collaboration with the High School Ministry Director, facilitate the equipping of seniors as they transition to living out faith in college.
  • Prepare and facilitate weekly Bible Studies, messages, etc. as the ministry grows.
  • Provide pastoral support for college students.
  • Active on-site outreach and discipling at local college and university campuses.
  • Provide spiritual and intellectual resources for students as they seek to explore and grow in faith.
  • Plan coordinate and implement a variety of ministries which cultivate faith and connection of both away and local college aged students at Wellspring.
  • Provide a launch point for students to connect to the life of the larger church body at Wellspring.
  • Form a team of committed and mature adult ministry partners who empower, encourage and support college and young adults as they live into their true identity in Christ.
  • Develop and lead ministry opportunities of service, connection, evangelism and growth. Including outreach programs, leadership development opportunities, small groups, mission experiences, and other special events.

Young Adult Ministry

  • Disciple young adults (20s to 30s) to enter into the life of the larger church body.
  • Plan and facilitate fellowship opportunities for young adults to connect with one another and invite other peers into community.
  • Integrate Young Adults into the wider vision of the church regarding Gospel Communities and Discipleship Groups.
  • Provide opportunities to serve the church and local community.
  • Organize and facilitate retreats and other shared experiences that will cultivate faith and connection.
  • Provide marriage resources and create small groups for newly married couples to encourage and equip each other, while providing touch points for larger church engagement.
  • Offer pastoral support as Young Adults grow in faith and tackle difficult life issues.

Other Pastoral Responsibilities

  • Assist in Sunday Worship services.
  • Occasional preaching.
  • Manage budget for the College and Young Adult Ministries.
  • Utilize different communication platforms such as emails, PCO, and social media to maintain connection, provide encouragement and communicate priorities with college and young adults.
  • Provides support necessary to execute the mission of the church.
  • Participates on committees as appointed or as necessary to support various church initiatives.
  • Assumes all other responsibilities assigned by the pastor.
