Purpose: To support the Assistant Pastor for Parish Life and Missions in executing the vision for missions at Third by mobilizing the congregation in personal missional engagement; leading, recruiting, and supporting Missions teams; and supporting and engaging Mission Partners. 

Accountability: Accountable to the Assistant Pastor for Parish Life and Missions (APPM)

Responsibilities:

(1) Congregational Engagement (40%)

  • Assists the APPM to cast vision, educate and empower the congregation in missional mindset and practice, direction, and training.
  • Envisions and executes regular opportunities for service and outreach (serve days, local mission support, parish engagement, service/ learning trips).
  • Helps lead the congregation in gracious connection with internationals in the city.
  • Conceives of and implements ways the congregation can connect with, pray for, and participate with our Mission Partners.
  • Provides for regular communication, prayer, and support for Third’s Mission partners.
  • Helps plan and prepare for regular local and global mission trips to deepen our partnership with our Mission Partners and train participants for humble, fruitful service.

(2) Mission Teams Leadership and Facilitation (30%)

  • Working with the APPM, helps shape the design and function of Missions teams.
  • Recruits, trains, and equips leadership for the Missions teams to execute on the vision and priorities for the overall ministry of Missions at Third.
  • Assists the APPM in planning and managing the Missions budget and overseeing allocations.
  • Lead and facilitate the Missions teams in our annual mission partner funding process.
  • Recruits, oversees, and develops volunteer teams for key local ministries (ESL, Immigrant and Refugee tutoring, Jobs for Life, etc.).
  • Works with the Deacons Development team to foster missional ministry and oversee the Deacons Fund.

(3) Mission Partner Relations (30%)

  • Receives and processes Mission partner support applications.
  • Works with the Finance Team to manage the Missions budget.
  • Personally communicates with each Mission partner at least once per year to foster a relationship of support and prayer.
  • Communicates stories from Mission partners to help engage our congregation with what God is doing in the world, including live and/or recorded interviews.
  • Fosters connection between partners and Parish Groups, small groups, Sunday school classes, etc.

Relationships: Relates to the Assistant Pastor for Parish Life and Mission as supervisor; leads and supports Missions teams.

Evaluation: Performance review will be annually by the Assistant Pastor for Parish Life and Mission and the Personnel Committee of Session. Adequacy of salary will be reviewed annually.

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience: 

  1. A minimum of 3 years of relevant experience is preferred. 
  2. A mature and growing Christian faith, adherence to the core values and beliefs of Third Church, and willingness to minister within the polity of our denomination, ECO.
  3. Proven administrative skills, including familiarity with basic accounting and the ability to navigate and understand a budget spreadsheet.  
  4. Proven project management skills, including the ability to envision and execute various projects at the same time.
  5. Demonstrated experience in recruiting, equipping, and managing volunteer teams and/or lay leaders. 
  6. Comfortable communicating with a large group of people in various settings (such as Sunday school classes, small groups, and email newsletters) and experience relating to and communicating with people of various cultural backgrounds.
