In the hiring process at FCBC, we consider four qualities when hiring: character, culture, competency, and chemistry.  We strive to find people who are of good character, walking with Christ, and on board with our culture. Chemistry means clicking with the pastors and other staff members.

Title: Family Pastor


To shepherd and serve FCBC in support of the Senior Pastor with a particular emphasis on youth and children.

Direct Report:

This position will work with the elder board and will report directly to the Senior Pastor.

Areas of Responsibility:

Elder (Approximately 1 hrs/week)

  • Serves as an elder. Unlike non-staff elders, the Family Pastor will not take a one year break from eldership at the end of a six-year rotation.
  • Participates in pulpit rotation (approximately 3-6 times per year), faithfully preaching Scripture to the congregation

College and Careers (Approximately 2 hrs/week)

  • Provides spiritual oversight to young adults (one-on-one, group meetings, etc.)
  • Develops new ways to engage, grow, disciple, and organize the young adults at FCBC
  • Helps other elders think through this growing area of ministry

Youth Group (Approximately 30hrs/week)

  • Disciples youth (6th-12th grade) with the goal of preparing them to be established in their faith and equipped to be disciple-makers in their homes, work, schools, and communities
    • Plans, coordinates, and participates in youth group ministries
    • Prepares and delivers messages at youth group meetings, Sunday school classes, and small group Bible studies in rotation with other teachers
    • Works with youth and adults to provide preaching opportunities and development of those gifts and skills through a rotation of teaching and preaching opportunities at youth events (to include Youth Sundays)
    • Facilitates and equips students for short-term mission trips locally and globally
  • Oversees and leads adult leaders
    • Plans and coordinates training for youth group leaders
    • Recruits new leaders
  • Engages and equips parents
    • Interacts with parents to work together in discipling their children
    • Provides periodic teaching opportunities for parents
  • Develops a proposed budget for youth ministry and administers it when approved

Children (Approximately 2hrs/week)

  • Oversees non-adult Sunday School, Bible Explorer, and other programs and opportunities for children in K-5th grade to present the Gospel in a caring and safe environment
  • Coordinates with Christian Education ministry leaders and volunteers
  • Advises in selection of curriculum and activities
  • Assists in recruiting and selection of leaders
  • Engages and Equips parents
    • Interacts with parents to work together in discipling their children
    • Provides periodic teaching opportunities for parents

General Staff Participation (Approximately 5 hrs/week)

  • Offers pastoral care in conjunction with deacons, elders, and the other vocational pastors
  • Oversees and assists in aligning financial expenditures of the church to the spiritual vision and priorities of FCBC
  • Participates in staff meetings
  • Communicates effectively with staff, volunteers, congregation, and outside ministries


  • Meets scriptural qualifications as outlined in 1 Timothy 3:1-7, particularly being a male of established Christian character, sound in faith and doctrine, and shall be qualified to proclaim the whole counsel of the Word of God
  • Fully adheres to and supports the FCBC Statement of Faith
  • Models loyalty, confidentiality, and a shared philosophy with the Senior and Associate Pastors
  • Possesses, demonstrates, and improves organizational and relational skills, working and communicating well with diversity of people including other vocational pastors, lay elders, members, staff, volunteers, visitors, missionaries, and others in the community
  • Possesses or is in process of obtaining a theological degree at a bachelor’s level or above

Service Evaluation:

The Family Pastor will be annually reviewed by the Senior Pastor based on the agreed upon goals set out in the Family Pastor’s “Key Result Areas.”  In order to stay on target, the Family Pastor will categorize and prioritize his ministry goals annually to be approved by elders with monthly check-ins with the Senior Pastor.

Time Requirements:

  • 40-50 hrs per week
  • Normal work week: Sunday -Thursday (Friday and Saturdays off)
  • Additionally, attendance at the following meetings are mandatory (weekly worship gatherings, regular and special-called member meetings, and all elder meetings)
  • 2 weeks (10 work days) of vacation per year, prorated based on date of hire, with a commitment to use all days within each year
  • Participates in an “on-call” rotation with other staff pastors for emergency pastoral needs
  • Modifications to work schedule as required and approved by Senior Pastor

Compensation, Benefits, and Responsibilities:

Salary and Compensation: As agreed upon


  • Eligible for sabbatical in accordance with the FCBC pastoral sabbatical policy
  • Will present his sabbatical plans to the Senior Pastor and elder board for approval in accordance with this same policy

Continuing Education

  • The Family Pastor will seek and be provided regular and continuing opportunities to develop and improve his gifts
  • The Senior Pastor and elders will assist the Family Pastor in identifying areas for improvement and evaluating formal and informal opportunities
  • The Family Pastor Will work with Senior Pastor and elders to approve a plan to complete (if not already completed): an MDiv or equivalent degree, EFCA Licensing, and EFCA Ordination, complete with a timeline, components, and resources required

Employment Guidelines

  • The Family Pastor will be held accountable to follow all guidelines outline in the document “FCBC Employee Handbook.”
