Midland Evangelical Free Church (Midland Free) is a Gospel-centered body of Christ followers located in Midland, Michigan. We aspire to be a Gospel-centered family where everyone we encounter moves closer to Jesus every day. We enjoy and glorify God, embrace His Word, and engage His world. Led by the Spirit, everyone welcomes, plugs in, and reaches out.  

The church consists of 15 staff members, including pastors and support staff. We currently have 550 weekly members and regular attenders (post-COVID).

Position Purpose

The Lead Pastor will be the primary preacher of God’s Word during Sunday morning worship services, as well as teach God’s Word, the doctrines found in the Bible, and the application of biblical principles to Christian living. He shall be primarily responsible for leading all pastoral and administrative staff and implementing the vision and mission of the church.

Qualifications and Gifting

  • Character Meets the biblical qualifications described in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:6-9.
  • Education/Training – Holds a Master of Divinity (M. Div.) degree from an evangelical seminary (preferred); proven experience in church leadership positions.
  • Preaching/Teaching – Demonstrates strong grasp of scripture, theology, and apologetics; demonstrates expository preaching skills.
  • Leading/Shepherding Demonstrates the ability to lead, mentor, and equip the staff and congregation for the work of ministry.
  • Humility – Exhibits a teachable spirit with demonstrated accountability to others.
  • Leadership – Builds the church staff into an integrated, cooperative, and high-functioning team. Works with pastoral and administrative staff to develop well-aligned ministry goals and plans. 

Specific Responsibilities

  • Ministry of the Word/Preaching – Serves as the primary expository preacher of God’s Word in Sunday morning worship services. Leads the development of the sermon themes, topics, and schedule. Shepherds the congregation into a deeper biblical worldview and personal obedience. Casts a vision for our church in the world and applies scripture to current culture. 
  • Shepherding – Connects with and cares for the staff and congregation. Shows grace and love in all teaching, preaching, and interpersonal relationships while emaining true to scripture, and the church’s doctrinal statements.
  • Elder Board – Participates on the Elder Board as they establish and evaluate the ministries of the church. Works closely with the Chairman of the Elder Board to establish an agenda for Elder Board meetings. Recognizes the “plurality of eldership” model.


  • Administration and Operations Leadership – Leads and manages the pastoral team, meeting regularly with all direct reports. Is accountable for the overall supervision of the pastoral and administrative support staff. Is accountable for the administrative and financial operations of Midland Free.
