About our church: Located on the north end of Newfound Lake, we are a small rural church of about 80 members with a strong presence in our community. We are affiliated with the New Hampshire Conference of the United Church of Christ. Music is an integral part of our worship.

Principal function of the position: The music director is responsible to the church and to the pastor for developing and promoting the music ministry of the church.

Requirements:

  • Skilled with acoustic piano in a worship setting
  • Familiarity with traditional Christian worship music (hymns) and orders of service
  • Familiarity with music typically used to supplement worship services
  • Ability to accompany and direct a mixed choir of 8-10 voices

Responsibilities (worship):

  • Select, prepare, and perform or arrange music for services, in all cases coordinating with the lessons and message for the service and consulting with the pastor:
    – The weekly Sunday worship service (10 a.m.):  Music typically includes a prelude; three hymns; the Gloria Patri; the Doxology; a postlude; plus additional music for communion services the first Sunday of the month.
    – Choir selections consist of an introit; special music anthem; offertory anthem; and a choral benediction.
    – The Christmas Eve service (8 p.m.):
    – Music typically includes a prelude; traditional Christmas hymns; and a postlude.
    – Choir selections include one or two anthems.
    – Sunday services during times when the full choir is not available (e.g. summer and some holidays).
    – Any special music for weddings, memorial services, or other special occasions, to be arranged with the parties involved and the pastor. The music director is given “first right of refusal” for these occasions; compensation for these events is typically arranged with the parties involved.

Responsibilities (choir):

  • Rehearse, direct, and accompany the choir.
  • Practice each Sunday at 9 a.m.
  • The full choir does not usually sing during the months of June, July, and August. However, some members occasionally participate during the summer months performing solos, duets, etc.

Administrative Responsibilities:

Provide music selections for the Sunday bulletin to the church secretary.

Compensation:

  • Pay is from $150 per week.
  • The position typically requires 3-4 hours per week.
  • Additional compensation opportunities are available for special services as described above.
