Rockville Baptist Church (Vernon, CT) – Pastor

The Big Picture

Rockville Baptist Church (rockvillebaptistchurch.org) is a small, independent Baptist church in southern New England seeking its next pastor.

The Church

Rockville Baptist Church has 28 members but averaged about 40 people in attendance pre-pandemic. Currently with social distancing there are regularly 30 people attending. We are located in rural Vernon, Connecticut, a town of about 29,000 people northeast of Hartford. The building, approximately 30 years old, seats 100 people and sits on a land parcel of 4 acres adjacent to Route 30, one of the main travel roads in town.

Our current Pastor has indicated that he will be stepping down no later than May, 2023 or, if a replacement is selected prior to that date, he would leave as soon as possible following arrival of the selected replacement. He has served in this position for 17 years, having been bi-vocational the entire time.

The church is conservative in theology, and the worship service is a mixture of old and new hymns and songs. The music team leads with reverence and respect, establishing the same atmosphere for the worship service.

Leadership of the church historically has consisted of pastor and several deacons. The church has had some conversations regarding the concept of elder leadership.

Although fairly consistent in the short term, church attendance has, over time, been declining. Currently the church attendees are a mixture of families consisting of empty-nest older retirees as well as younger families with small children. There is a great deal of love for one another among the families, many of whom have had longstanding relationships within the church.

As leadership has considered the future, there is the realization that a turnaround is necessary. By and large the church as a whole does not have a consistent history of reaching out with the gospel, but some in the fellowship are willing to grow in that regard.

RBC periodically attempts some varied outreach activities but those are substantially stand alone in nature. The activities have not usually been large and, to the best of our knowledge, have not yielded much in the way of positive results in the lives of those we have tried to reach.

The church’s mission statement is short in words but has a lifelong timeline: “Rockville Baptist Church exists to honor God by making fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ.”

The Candidate

The position is flexible enough that it could be structured full-time or part-time. The desire is for the position to be full time for the first two years with a mutual determination for subsequent hours to be made at the end of that period. Our current Pastor is bi-vocational, so such viable candidates would also be considered. The Pastor must have a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ and hold to the Bible being the fully inspired, inerrant Word of God. The Bible would be the foundation of the preaching. Overseeing a church turnaround, shepherding the congregation and the equipping of the church for works of service would also be a part of the duties.

RBC is looking for someone who has a passion for the gospel, but who can also be a patient, persistent shepherd in a small New England church setting.

The Qualifications

  • Giftedness in church revitalization.
  • Faithful preaching of sermons based on Scripture.
  • Leading the interested in reaching out with the gospel.
  • Design and lead community outreach events.
