Corrections Chaplaincy; Prison Chaplain Job

Are you an individual who wants to make a difference in the lives of people needing faith-based support who are currently incarcerated and working towards rehabilitation and/or re-entry to the community? If so, this opportunity may be the ideal fit for you.

Key Duties include:

  • Planning, conducting, coordinating or facilitating programs for inter-faith religious services in facility psychiatric hospital units, developmental disabilities centers, or correctional facilities. The programs may include: worship services, faith group studies, bible studies, individual or group pastoral/ spiritual care or counseling.
  • Employees assess patients/inmates upon admission or transfer to determine if there are pastoral/spiritual care needs.
  • Employees may supervise religious/spiritual services provided by volunteers and inmate faith helpers as well as recruit and coordinate religious/spiritual volunteers and services on a continual basis.
  • Employees may visit patients in community hospitals; lead or arrange approved religious rites and sacraments such as blots, communion, equinox, baptism, or holy days.
  • Chaplains may coordinate pastoral volunteers.

Education Equivalency Verification

Veterans’ and National Guard Preference
Applicants seeking Veteran's Preference must attach a DD-214 Member-4 Form (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) to their applications.
Applicants seeking National Guard Preference must attach an NGB 23A (RPAS), along with the state application, if they are a current member of the NC National Guard in good standing.
Applicants who are former members of either the NC Army National Guard or the NC Air National Guard, with honorable discharge and six years of creditable service, must attach a copy of the DD 256 or NGB 22, along with the state application.

Minimum Education and Experience

Master of Divinity degree from a school of theology or seminary accredited by The Association of Theological Schools (ATS) and one year of residency in Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) or Equivalent professional chaplaincy/clergy experience and Ordination or membership in a recognized religious governed body.

OR

Master’s degree in related field from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of residency in Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) or equivalent professional chaplaincy/clergy experience and Ordination or membership in a recognized religious governed body or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
