Position Overview:
The Lead Pastor will be devoted to the service of Christ in and through the Beacon Covenant Church of Attleboro, communicating God’s Word, ministering to spiritual needs, and providing biblical leadership. He/she shall be a person of exemplary character, living life in accordance with the Word of God. The Lead Pastor shall be responsible for the overall preaching, teaching, and pastoral ministry in the life of the church. He/she shall lead the pastoral staff and will be the one to whom the congregation, Executive Board, paid staff, and the various Boards and committees, look to for spiritual leadership and guidance. It is desirable that the Lead Pastor be a member and in good standing with the Evangelical Covenant Church Ministerium or is willing to pursue licensing and ordination in the denomination. Upon installation, shall become a member of the church, and an ex-officio member of the Executive Board and all other boards and committees.
General Responsibilities:
Leadership: In partnership with the Executive Board, provide vision and leadership for both short-term and long-term planning fitting with the congregation’s Mission and Vision statements; Lead the church staff and ministries, delegating authority and responsibility as deemed appropriate; Give input to the Pastoral Relations Committee (PRC) on the effectiveness of paid staff while also receiving input from the PRC and staff about his/her effectiveness; Mentor and support the lay leadership; Be active in the local community and the wider Evangelical Covenant Church.
Worship, Preaching and Teaching: Be responsible for the planning and implementation of the church’s worship services; Serve as the primary preacher for the congregation, preaching and teaching God’s Word with clarity, passion and relevance; Assist in teaching Confirmation Classes; Promote and lead the Inquirer’s Class on a regular basis; Oversee and provide input to the educational programs of the church.
Shepherding: Foster a healthy spiritual environment in the church that facilitates the spiritual growth of individuals and the congregation; provide for the pastoral care of individual and families within the church (including visitation, counseling, baptisms, wedding and funerals); Administer the sacraments, Holy Baptism and the Lord’s Supper, according to the practice of the Evangelical Covenant Church.
Administration: Oversee and collaborate with Primary Church Staff (Associate Pastor for Youth and Congregational Life, Director of Music Ministries, Office Administrator), meeting regularly for the purpose of planning, mentoring, and development; Provide oversight to the content of bulletins, newsletters and other church publications. The Lead Pastor shall provide the church with an accurate record of pastoral acts and present a written report to the congregation at the annual business meeting.
Accountability:
The Lead Pastor reports directly to the Executive Board, which will hold him/her accountable for fulfilling all job responsibilities. He/she will attend regular meetings with the Executive Board and the Deacon Board and will attend other Board meeting as needed. The Lead Pastor will establish and keep regular office hours to ensure adequate accessibility. He/she will submit quarterly reports and other update as needed; and will lead with authenticity in accord with the Evangelical Covenant Church Affirmations, and the Constitution and Bylaws of this congregation.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
The Lead Pastor shall invest time in prayer, studying the Bible and seeking God. He/she shall foster a healthy spiritual environment in the church that facilitates the spiritual growth of individuals and the congregation; Encourage fellowship and unity in the congregation by supporting and promoting small group development and participation, and actively support Little Blessing in its ministry. The Lead Pastor should be active and encourage stewardship (including pledging and giving) and should maintain spiritual and physical health by taking vacations, maintain a healthy lifestyle, and attending conferences and retreats.
