Other Details

Shukugawa Bible Church in Nishinomiya, Japan, is seeking a passionate, uplifting, encouraging, spiritually-led, Bible-believing Missionary English Teacher to help the body of Christ in an unreached, unengaged country of Japan. This Missionary English Teacher will cooperate with Japanese church members to help lead a weekday outreach program and become the gateway to the gospel for those who has never heard of the Bible before.  Since it was started in 1970 by TEAM missionaries as Shukugawa Christian Center, our English conversation school has been a successful tool for reaching new seekers.  Currently we employ three to four American/Canadian Missionary English Teachers who teach at the school and serve at our church.

We are seeking an American citizen who is a native English speaker, single, missions-minded, and able to teach conversational English to beginners. This is a full-time church staff position.  We currently have openings from July 2024 and more for later.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach English classes from Tuesday to Saturday.
  • Attend and serve at the morning worship service and participate in afternoon activities on Sunday.
  • Plan outreach events with the missionary team (at least three major events a year).
  • Be involved in outreach and participate in discipleship training in the church.
  • Participate in staff meetings twice a week.
  • Distribute fliers for promotion of the school and church.
  • Serve in other aspects of ministry at the discretion of the Senior Pastor.
Qualifications:
In addition to a growing relationship with Christ, a candidate should have:
  • A love for the Lord, His Word, His Church, and the Japanese people.
  • A passion for sharing the Gospel.
  • A heart to serve and be involved with church activities.
  • The ability to work as part of a team.
  • Healthy self-esteem.
  • The willingness and ability to work under the guidance and authority of the church’s Senior Pastor.
  • Flexibility!
  • The willingness and ability to do things “Japanese-style.”
  • A heart for missions and reaching others for Christ.
  • A bachelor’s degree or higher.
It is essential that the missionary be able to serve under the leadership of Shukugawa Bible Church. We expect the missionary to work in the capacity of a full-time church staff member to support the church’s ministries. The missionary will teach conversational English classes from Tuesday to Saturday. Each class includes a 15-20 minute Bible lesson, which the missionary prepares and teaches. Each class holds two to six Japanese students and most of them are non-believers.
On Sundays the missionary will attend worship and church events, which may last most of the day. You will be able to worship with and serve alongside Japanese believers! During the Sunday morning worship service, our pastor presents a strong expository message, which is simultaneously translated into English. In addition to our English ministry, we also have thriving young-adult, parenting and children’s ministries. Many of our church members are the fruit of our English ministry.
Our church and English school moved to a new building in January of 2012 and we are praying for more space as we grow.
It is a growing, disciple-making church in Japan where the average church membership is 30 people or fewer. God has been blessing our church, and we have over 100 people in our congregation.
It is an exciting, growing ministry to be a part of!
This is a wonderful ministry that’s great for anyone seriously considering missions. While any TESL experience or knowledge of Japanese would be helpful, neither are required. However, flexibility, a servant’s heart, commitment and love for Jesus and for the Japanese people are essential. Because of the ministry focus and living situation, Americans in their 20\’s and 30\’s are the best fit for this position.

Our church provides housing, utilities, and medical insurance for each missionary, as well as monthly financial support of 140,000 yen. We require the missionary to sign a two-year contract, but many stay longer. If you are interested in this ministry, desire to work alongside a local evangelism and discipleship-minded church, and agree with the terms above, please contact us. We welcome any questions you may have. Come join our ministry to reap a harvest among the Japanese people!

We have associate pastors who graduated from seminaries in the US.  Feel free to contact us with any concerns.

To apply, please send us your Christian faith testimony and a description of your current faith life, a resume, two recent pictures of yourself, and a pastor’s reference.
