Description
Our church is located in the small coastal fishing community of South Bristol and is referred toa s “the little church on the hill” by locals and summer fold alike. We are an open and affirming church and we encourage and welcome ALL people to join us in our praise of God and in our search for the Lord’s guidance in our daily lives.
our congregation is small (approximately 25 in the winter months and 50 in the summer ones) but we are committed to ensuring our little church on the hill remains a beacon of light and hope to all who seek comfort in God’s word for many generations to come. Happily, we are beginning to see an increase in both our winter and summer attendance due to our interim pastor’s inspirational leadership and our own outreach efforts within the community. We delight in seeing new and returning faces in our sanctuary and in our Parish Hall where we gather for sustenance after every Sunday morning service. Members of our congregation, both new and old, volunteer their time and services in numerous ways- preparing the weekly bulletin, reading scripture (and providing thoughtful explanations when needed). changing the information on our outside sign, preparing food and coffee for our weekly after service gathering, providing technical support for remote viewing of our services, knitting prayer shawls, providing fresh flowers for our altar, offering rides to church, and so much more.
Our guiding principles are Peace, Hope, Justice and Love and we renew our commitment to those principles by lighting a candle representing them at the beginning of every Sunday service. We close each Sunday service by standing in a circle, holding hands with one another, and singing together all the words to the uplifting song, “Let There Be Peace on Earth.”
According to our by-laws…“The avowed purpose of the Union Congregational Church shall be to worship God, to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ, to celebrate the Sacraments, to realize Christian fellowship within the church and the Church Universal, to render loving service to humankind, and to strive for righteousness, justice, peace, and truth. Our understanding of Christian truth is that common to the churches of the United Church of Christ.” We are a small, dedicated and enthusiastic group trying to live out this mission in our daily lives as witnessing people demonstrating the Good News of God’s love and a covenantal people joining together with God and each other to be an expression of the Body of Christ in today’s world. We are a friendly church, and all are welcome.
