Pastor Position Description
Purpose:
To provide a balanced ministry of preaching, teaching, pastoral care and organizational leadership, thus enabling the church to fulfill its mission statement and grow to its fullest potential in Christ.
Qualifications:
The pastor must be an ordained Minister of the Word in good standing in the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, or willing to transfer to EPC from a similar denomination.
Shepherd/ Leader Responsibilities: The pastor will:
- Oversee, guide and shepherd the Center EPC church as it works together to fulfill the vision statement: To be a church that proclaims the love of Christ by serving and building personal relationships with our community.
- Study, teach and preach weekly from the entirety of the inspired, infallible, and authoritative Word of God.
- Officiate the sacraments of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper.
- Provide for Christian marriage and funeral services for those involved in the life of the congregation.
- Pray with and for the congregation.
- Serve as a model of Biblical leadership for the staff, church officers, and members by encouraging and shepherding the Center EPC congregation.
- Teach, train, encourage, and empower the Session to assume its biblical leadership role in the life of the congregation in accordance with Scripture and the EPC Book of Order.
- Moderate Session as a teaching elder and, in conjunction with the ruling elders, share church governance and encourage the congregation in the worship and service of God, equipping them for their tasks within the church and their mission in the world and encouraging them to participate in ministry in the church and the community.
- Work with the elders to prayerfully discern and plan for future ministry, mission needs and spiritual growth.
Congregational Care/ Fellowship:
The pastor, along with the Deacons, will share in the ministries of sympathy, witness and service, exercising pastoral care with special attention given to the sick, home churched, dying and troubled. Pastoral care includes visiting and encouraging congregants through home and hospital visits with the help of the Elders and Deacons.
Administration: The pastor will:
- Serve as Head of Staff and, as such, will oversee the administrative functions as well as the health, unity, morale, development, and ministry fruitfulness of the church staff.
- Work with Session to focus the organizational structure of the church to carry out the vision statement.
- Plan and prepare for weekly worship and special services with the Praise Team and Worship and Prayer Committee.
- Support and assist the Trustees in the faithful stewardship of the building and grounds so that the facilities provide adequate support for various ministry and outreach programs, as well as the mission projects of the church.
Community Responsibilities:
The pastor, as a representative of Center EPC, should be active and involved in the formal and informal community networks to collaborate in Gospel-center ministries in Grove City, and overseeing distinct outreach and service ministries in the community and around the world, including strengthening the relationship of Center EPC with the Evangelical Presbyterian Church and in the Presbytery of the Alleghenies.
Personal Effectiveness:
- Be open and caring, displaying Christian love to all.
- Listen to and consult with leaders and members of the church.
- Be open to constructive criticism if a problem arises, and strive to deal with conflict in a way that results in a mutually satisfactory solution.
- Pursue educational opportunities for personal and professional growth.
- Act under the authority of the Book of Order and scriptures.
