Position Overview

The greatest strength you will bring to this ministry is your relationship with God. You stay close to the Lord in Scripture, in prayer, and in the way you walk alongside people. You give them Christ. You know who you are and who you are not, serving out of a deep sense of identity in Him. Sensitive to the Holy Spirit, you exercise your God-given strengths while recognizing your limitations. You invest in your own healing and growth, and in doing so, lead others to restoration and transformation through Jesus.

As Senior Pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Honolulu, you will lead with humility, grace, and courage, inspiring our church ‘ohana to grow as a Christ-centered, diverse, and intergenerational community. You will shepherd our two campuses, Ko‘olau and The Vine, to live out our mission—“Joining Jesus to restore and transform one another and our world.”

In partnership with session, staff, and the congregation, you will guide our church toward the fulfillment of our three Vision Mountains by 2030:

  1. A hub of healing for broken hearts, spirits, minds, and bodies—confirmed by hundreds of testimonies.
  2. A church where everyone is learning from and investing in new generations, taking new steps with Jesus together.
  3. A church actively serving our local communities and beyond.

Key Responsibilities

  • Preaching and Teaching
    • Preach scripture-rich, Christ-centered sermons that connect faith to the realities of everyday life.
    • Develop sermon series that inspire, challenge, and unify our congregation across diverse demographics.
    • Lead with humility and levity, staying true to the Gospel and keeping our focus on Jesus.
  • Spiritual Leadership
    • Stay deeply connected to God and sensitive to the Holy Spirit, modeling a life of prayer, grace, and dependence on Him.
    • Shepherd the spiritual health of our congregation by guiding them in our walk with Christ.
  • Leadership and Collaboration
    • Serve as Head of Staff and Moderator of Session, cultivating unity, accountability, and growth among church leadership.
    • Equip and empower staff, elders, and ministry leaders, bringing out our best and helping us serve in our strengths.
  • Strategic Vision
    • Spur development and implementation of strategies in collaboration with the staff and session to guide the church toward fulfilling our Vision Mountains by 2030.
    • Create meaningful ways to measure progress, focusing on welcoming new generations without neglecting long-standing covenant partners.
  • Pastoral Care
    • Ensure pastoral care needs are met through staff, elders, and deacons, with compassion and sensitivity.
  • Community Engagement
    • Represent our church to the local community, ECO, and the global body of Christ as a voice of restoration and transformation.
    • Support the building of partnerships with other churches and faith-based organizations to serve those in need.
    • Support outreach efforts that extend our mission into local and global communities.
  • Administrative Oversight
    • Partner with the session and staff to ensure the church’s operational and financial health, including budgeting, facilities, and resource stewardship.
    • Monitor the operations of Ko‘olau Ballrooms and Hakuhia, ensuring alignment with the church’s mission.
    • Convene an annual meeting to share a Senior Pastor’s report and engage the congregation in meaningful dialogue.

Qualifications

  • Ordination: Must be ordained or ordainable within ECO (A Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians).
  • Education: Master of Divinity (M.Div.) or equivalent theological degree from an accredited seminary.
  • Theological Alignment: Strong commitment to ECO’s Essential Tenets, Reformed theology, and Presbyterian governance.
  • Experience: Proven experience in pastoral leadership, with a preference for 10+ years in a Senior Pastor or equivalent role within a Reformed or Presbyterian context.
