Other Details

Nestled about an hour north of Venice and approximately four and a half hours east of Milan lies the enchanting city of Aviano. With a population of around 9,000 residents, it serves as a cozy haven for numerous military families. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Dolomites mountain range in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Aviano offers a wealth of experiences waiting to be explored. The location has a small town atmosphere with easy access to the best of all Europe has to offer. Findings from Aviano show that the area has been populated since the Bronze Age
and many historians believe that a commercial center developed where present day Aviano is situated, with a cultural and defensive center in the castle area. In 1911 one of the first airfields of the Italian Air Force was built in Aviano; The base was among the first ones available to Italian aviation, which in the following years was enlarged and becoming increasingly important until it became the NATO Aviano AB in the 1950s. The Aviano Air Base is why Aviano is home to many American families.
